How can I improve 'Who were children and parents of Jacob Fisher and Sarah Hodges?'

I would like help with improving the question

Who were children and parents of Jacob Fisher and Sarah Hodges?

The question was closed as 'It's difficult to tell what is being asked here' and was referred with a link to the FAQ that says questions are closed because 'they are not a good fit for this site'.

I asked the question because I thought it met 'practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face' from the faq. I thought 'who were the children of Jacob Fisher and Sarah Hodges' was a straightforward genealogical question.

I confess to still being confused on how much and what context to add. I included the research I'd done (which was obviously not sufficient - that's why I asked the question). I included why I asked it (which in hindsight is irreverent since it confused the issue and sidetracked the specific question asked).

The answers supplied were very useful to me. Negative proof (ie disproving assumptions) is just as valuable as positive proof. I upvoted the helpful answers but held off checking 'answered' for the 'best' due to the advice on meta to wait longer while we are in beta before answering (and hoping an even better one would come along). Now I can't because the question has been closed.

The question was closed as not a good fit for the site. Can some one explain what is off-topic about asking about children and parents of a particular person?

I hoping instead it was closed because it was of poor quality and others can help me improve it.
